Here are some tips to keep in mind when picking the perfect watermelon: 1. Look for a firm, symmetrical watermelon with no dents or bruises. 2. It should be heavy, as watermelons are 92% water! 3. Let's start the cell-a-brations! Sickle cell disease has been recognized as a public health priority. In fact, it is the most frequent genetic disease worldwide and is present in four continents: sub-Saharan Africa, Asia, the Americas, and Southern Europe.
What is Sickle Cell Anemia? Sickle cell anemia is an inherited form of anemia. Anemia is a condition in which a person does not have enough healthy red blood cells to carry enough oxygen throughout the body. With sickle cell, the red blood cells become sticky and take on the shape of sickles or crescent moons instead of being flexible and round, which is what they look like in a healthy body. This causes the irregularly shaped red blood cells to get caught in small blood cells, blocking blood flow to certain parts of the body. What are the symptoms? Symptoms include anemia, episodes of pain, painful swelling of hands and feet, frequent infections, delayed growth, and vision problems. What are the causes? Sickle cell is caused by a mutation in your gene that tells your body to make hemoglobin. Hemoglobin facilitates red blood cells carrying oxygen from the lungs to other parts of your body. The gene is passed from generation to generation. Both parents must pass on the mutated gene for their child to have sickle cell. If only one parent passes on the gene, the child will be a carrier and will most likely not show symptoms. There are many lifestyle and home remedies to help avoid complications of sickle cell anemia such as folic acid supplements, a healthy diet, and drinking lots of water!
